My PhD-project is about honorific statues in the Early Roman Empire. In my thesis, I will examine the landscape of honorific statues in cities in both Italy and western Asia Minor. I will look at patterns of distribution, how the statues’ setting relates to their surroundings - the topography, architecture and other objects. My interest is to see how honorific statues were used in the process of creating and maintaining collective memory and common identity in the early imperial cities, and how different cities’ different backgrounds and different relations to Rome may have affected the process. The project will engage with theories of collective memory, viewers theory and spatiality.
