Historical Archaeology in Portugal: Social and Cultural Identities in a Globalized World

17 mars 2025 15:15 till 16:30 Seminarium

Tania Manuel Casimiro (University NOVA, Lisbon): Historical Archaeology in Portugal: Social and Cultural Identities in a Globalized World

This lecture explores Portugal’s role as a crossroads of cultural exchange during the height of European maritime expansion. As a hub of global interactions, Lisbon hosted diverse communities, including Africans, Indians, and Indigenous peoples from South America, whose presence profoundly shaped European identities and cultural practices. The talk will explore how these encounters developed hybrid identities, influenced art and thought, and challenged dominant cultural narratives. By reflecting on these historical dynamics, the lecture highlights parallels with contemporary debates on globalization, identity, and cultural diversity
